Mastering Go Concurrency: From GMP Architecture to Real-World Patterns
Go's concurrency model is one of its most celebrated features. But spawning goroutines with go func() is only the beginning. To design robust, scalable systems, you need to understand how the scheduler multiplexes goroutines and how to structure concurrency with proven patterns.
This post merges the GMP scheduler fundamentals with practical patterns you can reuse in production.
Part 1: The Theory (GMP Model)
Before diving into patterns, let’s visualize how Go runs thousands of goroutines on a small pool of OS threads.
1) The Big Picture: G–M–P Scheduler
The Go runtime uses a specific model to manage concurrency:
- G (Goroutine): A lightweight thread managed by the runtime; starts with a small stack that grows/shrinks.
- M (Machine): An OS thread.
- P (Processor): Scheduling context + local run queue. An M must hold a P to execute Go code.

When the application calls go func(), a new G is created and enqueued. A P dequeues a runnable G and hands it to an M, which executes it.
